GPS Series: On one of his walks outside Elgin, Kershaw spotted a very small patch of 20-year-old Syrah grapes grown on Klein River which is now the smallest vineyard in South Africa. With a distinctive Inner-climate, this piece produces wines with consistent recognition and awards and was therefore chosen by him to use the GPS range to showcase the potential of the site.

Intense aromas of black pepper, cinnamon wood, and black cherry lead to a juicy & full palate. Flavors of Morello cherry mingle with licorice, baked plums, and bay leaves, supported by fine & ripe tannins.

Autumn harvest, transfer of clean fruit to open vintners. The grapes undergo a 3-day maceration before spontaneous fermentation begins. After a gentle pigeage the grapes are left with the skins for 20 days. Then, by gravity, the wine is transferred to the barrels while what remains in the tank is pressed into a vortex. Malolactic fermentation in barrel, light sulphurization, and aging for 16 months. The wine is bottled unfiltered without any other intervention.

Barrels: A small number of barrels were selected, all from Burgundy, only French oak. Importantly, each clone and soil type was micro-distributed as a separate batch. Each lot used an algorithm set up to keep data on which barrels performed best and how many new and how many used barrels were used. Overall, the average in 2018 was 45% new oak barrels 89% of 500 liters, and 11% egg-shaped tanks.
