Pinotage is produced from grapes planted in 1987 in soils of slate & quartz composition. Sustainably and aridly grown in a harsh, dry climate, this wine is aged in oak barrels, which lends it complexity. Strong element of fruit, with notes of oak and balanced acidity.
Pinotage is a grape variety created in South Africa in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold, the first professor of viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch. It was made up of Pinot Noir and Hermitage and became one of South Africa's most famous varietals. The first commercial plantings of Pinotage took place in 1941 at Myrtle Grove Estate – where Journeys End and Mount Rozier vineyards are now located. The sheep depicted on the label are a traditional feature of the Swartland which is renowned for its wine production as well as its strength in sheep breeding.
